Stuart, Gilbert. John Adams.

It is painted at the request of John Quincy Adams, who engages Stewart to paint another portrait of his father, more than twenty years after he had painted the first. Josiah Quincy later notes, “Stewart’s second portrait] caught a glimpse of the living spirit shining through the feeble and decrepit body.” The painting is today owned by the Museum of Fine Arts.
